Snow Day

SNOW DAY!!!!!

I have been waiting for this day since January of 2007. I am crazy about snow...I just love it. I love watching it, walking in it, scraping it off my car, eating it (with fruit flavoured squash, of course, in the traditional sno-cone fashion) - you get the picture. This year is living up to the expectations I had when I moved here. January was fabulously cold with lovely white days that lasted for weeks. Ah, the elusive snow at last! A frozen lake to glide on! But it was easy, much too easy. My street was gritted so there was no problem driving. The pavement was cleared everyday so there was no problem walking anywhere. It was really really cold so you didn't get very wet. I suppose what I really wanted was to be inconvenienced. Wholy and utterly inconvenienced by the weather. The wait has been a long one and I'm afraid that I had given up all hope of experiencing such a day. But today it happened. For the first time, I had to dig my way to the real world, clear my drive to get my day going and it was awesome! Threw my muckboots on, threw off my coat, grabbed the shovel and went to town, first getting my car unstuck then clearing the whole darn drive. It was brilliant.

I love weekends...

Ah, it's Friday once again and I can't wait until tomorrow when I wake up and realise that I don't have to be anywhere at 9am.

Tonight is horseback riding and I'm sure my wondrous steed (called Apache) will try throwing me off again. He's moved from straight bucking to a kind of sideways bucking in hopes of getting me off but I've managed to stay on this far. no apples for him if he succeeds.

Tomorrow is ice skating day with Steinvor...did I mention that I had bought a pair of beautiful ice skates? Inspired by the freezing temperatures and Steinvor's ice skating capabilities (fantastic!) I have gotten my own pair of ice skates in hopes of one day being competent on the ice. I am what I call ' an off the waller', in that, I have just graduated from holding on to the wall to skating beside it. Well done me! Steinvor is teaching me the forward cross over (harder than it looks) and I've managed to go around a few times without falling and hurting myself. I'm afraid that my years and years on roller skates doesn't really give me any sort of advantage on the ice rink and that I'm one of those people who might be mistaken for one of ladies whose been inspired by 'Dancing on Ice' and has gotten a pair of skates to become the new ingenue of the ice rink...I don't think so.

My new girlie ice skates...Risport Etoile...gotta love these.

I keep forgetting to blog!

I've gotten so out of the habit of blogging that I've forgotten that I have a blog. I seem to justify not blogging because a)everyone uses facebook to keep things up to date, b) I don't actually think that people look at this and c) I don't suppose there's anything going on that deserves blogging. BUT there are some cool happenings in my near future...Juliana turns 8 in February...Kit Kat turns 6 in April...going to Madrid in May...going camping/backpacking in Wyoming with the McElroy's in June!

My cool new North Face Summit Series 2 in 1 Jacket with Gortex outer shell and detachable inner fleece...bring it on Tetons!

It's time to get off my butt and start blogging again...

But then what's the difference between blogging and facebooking? And then there's Twitter which I haven't figured out how to work. It's all so confusing!

JULIANA MCELROY IS 7 YEARS OLD!!!!!!

Technical Difficulties

I'm afraid that I've been having some technical difficulties posting my pictures (the keyboard doesn't work on my home desktop computer and I'm just too lazy to sort it out.) I did manage to somehow make this collage and so perhaps this will give you just a little glimpse of what has been going on with me in the last 6 months.

Starting top left and going clockwise: on the road to Gairloch for camping, fall foliage, Sophie with her bug hat (we all looked like idiots but these saved our asses!), frozen everything (it was -4 C all day - brrrr!)

Stockholm and the Weather

Loved Stockholm. What a beautiful city. We arrived on a Friday night to a gloriously cold and wet city. The rather sombre weather made it seem a bit more haunting and mysterious, especially as the streets were often completely deserted. Stockholm in January would not appear to be high on the list of tourist destinations and this made it even better...no lines - thank god! We did a lot of walking and napping and the weekend whooshed past until alas, we were home again on Monday night. I'll be posting pictures this weekend.

The weather in the UK seems to be all that anyone is talking about these days. The UK has been saddled with oodles of snow, that is, unless you live in Stirling, Scotland. We had a fair bit of snow by Monday night (driving home from work was hideous) but the snow had melted away by morning - but only if you live in Stirling. It's been snowing a teeny bit the last couple of days and has been cold enough to keep the ground white and lovely. I can only hope that it will stay this way over the weekend so that I can finally enjoy a white winter weekend!

I go, we go, we all go for Aygo!

I've got a new, used car. She is the 2007 Toyota Aygo, a wee silver streak of panache and beauty. I've inherited her from David's mother, who sadly can't drive the tiny speedster any longer.
I think the diminutive stature of this snazzy vehicle officially makes me tres European.

We're Going Nordic

I have decided that this year is the year that we start exploring a bit. Adventures afar have been limited since my arrival in Scotland. After Dad got sick most of my holidays were spent travelling back to California - now that illness and death are looming no more, it's time for some sightseeing.

So we've already done a few days in Paris at New year and at the end of this week we are off to Stockholm for a long weekend. I never thought that I'd have an inclination to head north but we were able to get two round trip tickets for £70 - and so Stockholm here we come. At the moment, temperatures are hovering at just above freezing with numbers dipping into the minuses with windchill but I am hoping for some really cold weather. Will keep you posted!

David Callander Does Something Sweet

So David and I were talking the other day about what we were going to do over the weekend and David says, "I've got a surprise for you on Saturday morning so you need to make some time for that." "A surprise?" I ask amazingly befuddled (because he I thought he didn't do surprises) and then I badger him with questions...do I have to wear anything special? Are we getting a puppy? Do we have to drive far? How long will we be gone for? And I have badgered with questions everyday since he mentioned it. Poor fellow.

So I'm at home for lunch today and he says, "How about we go in to town and we can take care of the surprise. It should only take about 15 minutes." 15 minutes? That means getting a puppy is out of the question - bummer and I don't need to be camera ready. Anyway, we go in to town and I've no clue yet what he's up to until he walks in the door of the jewellery shop. Oh my... David has, with the help of Suzy Gillies, picked out and paid for my wedding band. Suzy and I had been to this jewellry shop around Christmas time and I pointed out the rings that I thought might go well with my engagement ring and she kindly relayed this information to my big softie. Turns out the ones that I picked out didn't quite work so well with my engagement ring but by tomorrow, when we go back to the store (alas, we had to leave because there were too many choices and I was on my lunch) I will have a wedding band...holy crap, I really am getting married.

Horrifyingly Lazy Blogger!

Wow...can't believe I haven't written anything in 6 months. I really didn't think anyone was following this anymore now that I've settled into my new home country and life has become a bit more ordinary. But alas, my sister complained that I haven't posted anything and so i will begin blogging again even if Terry McElroy is the only one that reads it!

I suppose I can condense the last six months as follows:

End of July: Took my first camping trip in Scotland with David and Sophie to Gariloch, a beautiful coastal town in Wester-Ross. The weather was incredible - hot and sunny, very 'unScottish' weather indeed and about the only week we got sun all last summer. Anyway, camping was lovely but Scottish camping isn't exactly like California camping. There were hoardes of people everywhere at the campsite and they tend to set up the biggest, most elaborate tents on the face of the planet and then surround their campsite in fencing so essentially their campsite takes up the same amount of space as a small home. Unbelievable. And then I learned about midges, which I've always heard of but never really encountered. A midge is a teeny tiny flying bug that comes out in the evening in swarms.

If you've ever had a horrible encounter with mosquitoes, then magnify that by 1000% and there you go. After our first night and our first encounter with the tiny biters, David wanted to flee back home but alas was convinced to stay. Alas, we remained at our campsite for a few rains and ran home once it started raining. I could not, however, return to work when we got back to Stirling since my face was so disfigured...42 bites...just on 2/3 of my forehead. Ouch!
August: I was really grumpy in August because we'd had virtually no sun all summer and it rained almost everyday.
September: Flew away to sunny and warm Portugal for a few days...and it rained.
October: The days really started getting colder and winter was surely on its way!
November: Spent Thanksgiving alone - sucks to me! Next year I'm taking Thanksgiving off and whooping it up with all the fixings.
December: The holidays were a bit nutty. Had the Evans clan up for 4 days and then ran away to Paris with Sophie. Loved Paris even though it was expensive (£14 for two hot chocolates, yes, that's about $20) and bitterly cold. Can't wait to go again! Ate way too much cheese and sauccisson but loved every minute of it.
Today: With the holidays over and June just around the corner, I'm constantly thinking about the wedding. Funnily enough, we haven't really done very much but have managed to get everything together and it seems to be falling in to place quite nicely. I freak out every now and again because I think that we haven't done enough but we've pretty much covered all our bases and with the first of the plane tickets being bought - Terry and the girls have booked their tickets - I'm getting quite excited.
I suppose that's enough catching up for now and will post pictures later!

My Girls

Just returned from a visit back to Cali. Although I love going back to see everyone, it never seems to get easier saying goodbye to everyone, especially my girls. I could never begin to describe how much I miss my California girls!

I've Done It!

I am officially a British driver! After several months of expensive lesson (which apparently paid off) I am now legally driving again as I just passed my driving test yesterday and am the recipient of a UK driving license! Hooray!!!

One of the best days...

For those of you who don't know, I have started taking riding lessons. I have returned to my equestrian roots after nearly a 26 year hiatus and am completely loving it. I go to a place called Drumbrae riding centre which is just behind the university where I work. One of my colleagues just started riding there as well as so we go together to our weekly lesson. Yesterday would have been my third lesson but when I got there, our instructor, Ron, asked if we wanted a lesson or to go on a hack (joy ride). Since it was another fine Scottish evening (sunny and warm if you can believe that) we decided to go on a hack. There really is almost nothing better than galloping through a Scottish forest and then coming out of the forest and watching the way the sun shines through the clouds in rays all over the countryside - sounds corny but it really it quite incredible.

Stay tuned as next week, Sonia and I have our first jumping lesson!

The saddest thing ever...

David, Sophie and I were at the lake on Saturday because it was a gorgeous Scottish day (pictures to be posted later). A gorgeous Scottish day isn't like a gorgeous day back home in California, they're better. Maybe it's because the light is different (and it really is quite different) or maybe it's because gorgeous Scottish days come along so infrequently, that we appreciate them a bit more.

Anyway, we took the boat out and had a lovely picnic on the shore on the far side of the lake. After a lovely lunch, Sophie and I left David napping on the beach while we went out for a nice leisurely row so that we could read our new InStyle magazine in peace. Glorious! Nothing better than rowing and reading about what I should pack on my next vacation. Eventually we went and picked up David, rowed some more, and went for a swim (freezing cold) - a perfect day. As we were admiring all the babies from the boat (baby sheep and baby geese) we spotted what looked like two giant plastic bags that were strewn on the shore. I was actually hoping it was garbage because the alternative was too miserable to think about. Lying on the shore was a dead swan and beside it was its mate, laying beside it just waiting for something to happen. Only makes it worse to think that swans are one of the few animals that mate for life. Wow, that really sucked.

Happy Birthday to Me

Thanks for all the birthday wishes this week! Can't believe I'm 39 and can't wait to turn 40 next year. Since I've moved to Scotland I've been celebrating my birthday on the downlow in part because I have no friends and no friends means no party! Anyway, David asked what I wanted for my birthday and I said I wanted him to make me a birthday cake - I didn't want him to ask Sheena to make one me and he wasn't allowed to buy one at the store. I requested a chocolate or chocolate/vanilla combo with no fruit or fruit sauce (bananas would have been okay) and with whipped cream frosting. I also requested that it be made with a Betty Crocker ready to go cake mix out of the box - I love Betty Crocker.

Here's what happened...

David came home from the grocery store after having spent over £50 on ingredients and supplies which included: fruit and fruit sauce and caster sugar for the seriously sweet icing and no whipped cream whatsoever. HMMM...

Was I wrong to be slightly miffed that he wanted to make the cake that he wanted rather than the one I wanted? It was my only request this year. I admit, I was a bitch and said no fruit on my cake and you had better go back to the store and get some damn whipped cream for my frosting.

David never made it back to the store. After labouring with the ingredients and putting it in the oven, it all went horribly wrong. When I went in to the kitchen to take a peek at it, I opened the oven door and as the smoke poured out of the oven, discovered that it was quite burned on top. David took it out of the oven, put in on a cooling rack, and at some point flipped it over after which the middle came pouring out because it was a bit undercooked.

The Final Result

We both had a really good laugh.

The date is set...

The Happy Couple on a Walk at Gleneagles.

The wedding extravaganza will be taking place on June 27th, 2009! Can't wait to get everyone over here for a seriously fun soiree. Will possibly be getting hitched at the church in Port of Mentieth which is where David grew up and the family home is. The church sits right on the lake and is about 20 minutes from our house in Stirling which is where we will be setting up a marquee for the reception.
